2023 Digital Reconstruction and Interaction Design of the Great Bust of Maitreya Buddha on Baoshi Hill
Digital reconstruction and interaction design of the great bust of Maitreya Buddha on Baoshi hill is one of Zong Cheng's art projects combined with photography, drawing, sculpture and historical research, which has been initiated since 2022 and completed recently. This project is based on the historical written materials, comparative analysis of image and filed research, along with his talents in plastic art and imagination to restore the once landmark of Hangzhou around West Lake on Baoshi Hill Since Song Dynasty - the abandoned and ruined giant bust of Maitreya Buddha. This project is carried out in four stages: First, complete the drone photogrammetry of the giant bust of Maitreya Buddha and generate the 3D model of the Buddha with the permission from Management Committee of Hangzhou West Lake Scenic Area. Second, Accomplish the reconstructed digital 3D model of the giant bust of Maitreya Buddha (rendering in crystal clear resin and yellowing resin) with the image of Maitreya Buddha in a Song Painting titled Scenic Attractions of West Lake, the styles and characteristics of Song Buddha statue and the photogrammetry 3D model as reference sources. Third, Layer my 3D model to the ruined giant bust of Maitreya Buddha with the Augmented Reality supported App for those visitors arrive at the relic site. Fourth, 3D print the reconstructed giant bust of Maitreya Buddha in pieces by using of crystal clear resin and fit them in certain mortises on the stone relic in order to keep the current appearance of the statue. The reconstructed 3D model is free for anyone to download from his website. Each person can modify and build their own digital Buddha Bust and share with others.
